The UK average for super unleaded is 183.8p, or £91.90 for a 50-litre tank. The gap between the cheapest and the dearest station reporting today is 102.0p a litre — £51.00 on the same fill. The map makes the west of Scotland look punishing, and for individual island forecourts it is — several are among the dearest in the country. But averaged out, the Highlands and islands come to 178.4p against 184.5p elsewhere in Scotland, a gap of −6.1p. The deep red patches are single expensive stations painting a thinly served area, which is why they are drawn paler than the rest.

How the map is built
Every station is a point with a price. For each pixel we take the average of the stations around it, weighted by the inverse square of the distance, so a station 2 km away counts far more than one 40 km away. Beyond 70 km a station stops counting entirely.
The coastline is real, not derived from the stations: it comes from Natural Earth, which is public domain. That matters for honesty as much as for looks — an earlier version drew the country from the reach of the stations themselves, which turned sparsely served regions into holes in the map.
What it cannot tell you
Colours show an area average, not a price you can drive to. Two stations a mile apart routinely differ by 10 pence, and the average hides both. Use the map to decide where to look, then the town pages to decide where to stop.
Prices older than 7 days are excluded, so a quiet corner of the country may be drawn from fewer stations than it has.
